What classis does

A broader assembly of the churches

Classis exists only when it meets. It does not rule over the churches, but serves them, as the Church Order sets out.

Article 26

Two delegates from each church

Consistories delegate two members with credentials. The churches take turns providing a chairman and convening the meeting.

Article 26

Inquiry into the churches

Classis asks each Consistory whether the Word is faithfully preached, the sacraments administered, discipline exercised and the poor cared for.

Articles 4–8

Examinations

Candidates for the ministry, ordinations and ministers from outside the federation are examined at classis.

Article 27

Church visitors

Two experienced office-bearers appointed by classis visit each council once every two years and report back.
